Risk Assessment Information

Museums & Galleries

There is much advice available and an excellent Security Manual has been produced by the UK Council for Museums Archives and Libraries Security Group (now called re:source). In addition there is the Museum Security Network run out of Holland who provide much helpful information.

The security manual is available from Professional, Managerial and Healthcare Publications (pmh@pavilion.co.uk) and costs £25.00 in the UK and £30.00 for overseas

When assessing risk one of your inputs should be theft statistics.

In the UK last year there were 42 thefts from Museums and Galleries from about 2700 organisations. This means there is a one chance in sixty of a theft occurring in any one year per establishment.

The thefts can be broken down into the following categories:

From Display Cases

From open displays

Pictures

Other displays

At night

From stores

Long timescale

64% of thefts were from displays during the day. The pattern of crime has migrated from night-time and fraud to snatches during open hours. As with most security matters the investment in night-time and control security has solved some of the problem and some has been displaced to less well protected areas. The security team at re:source have identified this problem and often recommend Euronova products as a quick and cost effective solution to improving day time and display security.

Euronova display alarms include anti-snatch alarms, shockwave radio alarm and the EBS anti-touch system. See museum security.
